Our work in Lean is based on two foundations. The first is Lean Thinking Principles, which are:

The Principles of Lean

These principles are universal. Exactly how to apply them will vary from sector to sector and organisation to organisation.

The second foundation is The Lean Business Model Research undertaken by Professor Peter Hines in Japan for 3 months, courtesy of Toyota Motors in 1994, and has provided us with the foundations for how we see Lean Implementation. This research followed the classic Womack/Jones/Roos book 'The Machine that Changed the World' which identified that Toyota was not just the best auto maker in the world, but by far and away the best wherever it operated in the world.

The research conclusions identified five elements behind this success:

  • Focus on customer value through policy deployment
  • Deploying through cross functional processes
  • Value stream management aligned to business goals
  • Lean tools and techniques aligned to need
  • Application in the extended enterprise

Since this original research work, a blind spot about people has been recognised. Equally, we recognise the dangers of simply copying what Toyota did in different environments. So we have adapted the outcomes of the research to use our language and to enable application in a wide set of sectors. It has become known as the Lean Business Model.
