Teaching an old process new tricks

Vale Logo
Client:   Vale
What was delivered:   Continuous Improvement Implementation
Sector:

Manufacturing

How do you introduce the latest thinking in continuous improvement to a production process that has worked well for more than 100 years? At the village of Clydach in the Vale of Swansea, it is surprising to find one of Europe’s largest nickel refineries. The plant, owned by Brazilian mining company Vale, refines nickel oxide from Canada into high purity nickel products in different forms including powder and pellets.

General manager Mike Cox has led the introduction of a continuous improvement culture to the plant. Mike has adopted a progressive, but long term view of the potential of the site in striving to ensure its sustainability and long term viability. He has focused upon improvement activity both in the shop floor environment and the boardroom, believing that strong leadership at all levels will be critical to their success.

The 'Inspiring Success: Good to Great' programme (part funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and delivered by S A Partners) was designed for small and medium sized enterprises within Wales' 'Objective 1' development areas.

The aim was to improve the competititiveness and survival rate of SMEs by implementing best practice process and leadership techniques to generate high impact business improvements.  The programme helped to focus management teams on what their customers valued and how they could structure their processes to deliver this value and consequently safeguard and strengthen their order books.

The assisted SMEs exceeded the targeted increase in turnover during the programme and created more jobs than expected.  Click here to read the full case study.
